After suffering a thumb injury on his non-throwing hand in the first half of Sunday’s loss against Oakland, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was forced to return for a short time late in the game after Geno Smith was knocked out.
At least it gave the notion Fitzpatrick could play if needed any point in the future. Because Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News tweeted Fitzpatrick will need surgery on the ligament damage suffered to his thumb.
Todd Bowles says Ryan Fitzpatrick’s MRI revealed ligament damage in thumb. He’s “day-to-day,” but “at some point” will need surgery

Bowles on if Geno Smith can play Sunday: “If he progresses during the week, there’s a chance he could.” — Manish Mehta (@MMehtaNYDN) November 2, 2015
For some reason if both quarterbacks are unable to play Sunday, rookie Bryce Petty would be the likely quarterback under center. The organization is currently pursuing options at QB for depth purposes.
Jets are looking at other QB options. “We’re going to see what else is out there”… For now, Petty is the only healthy QB

It will be interesting to see who takes the most snaps with the first team this week. If the Jets were to bring in a QB this week, it would show at least one of Fitzpatrick or Smith might be unable to play Sunday. Whoever takes the first-team snaps gets the best chance of starting this week.
