New York Jets starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had successful surgery on the torn ligament in his left hand (non-throwing hand) today, and isn’t expected to miss any time.

There were questions about if and when Fitzpatrick was going to decide to have the surgery in season. After being advised by team doctors that he was going to need it, head coach Todd Bowles and the rest of the organization decided that the best time to have it would be today due to the 10-day layoff between now and the Jets next game on Sunday, November 22 against the Houston Texans.

Fitzpatrick has played through the injury over the last five days, including both games last Sunday 28-23 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Thursday’s 22-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. In both games, Fitzpatrick was a combined 36/68 for 465 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Both interceptions came against the Bills, and each were costly.

The Jets heading into Week 11 are 5-4. With a loss to a division rival, the Buffalo Bills have overlapped the Jets for current AFC playoff positioning. Due to AFC tie-breakers, the Jets are ahead of the 5-4 Pittsburgh Steelers. The 4-4 Oakland Raiders, with a win against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, have an opportunity to overtake the Jets for a Wild Card position.

Under the circumstances, Fitzpatrick did the best that he could. Thursday night’s poor gameplan to start made it hard on Fitzpatrick to throw in rainy conditions.

It’s expected that the bearded player, nicknamed “FitzMagic,” won’t miss any time.
